H.Pylori Infection
H. pylori Infection: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori) is a common stomach bacteria that can cause gastritis
(stomach inflammation), ulcers, and, in rare cases, stomach cancer. It spreads
through contaminated food, water, or close contact. Many people have this bacteria, but
only some develop symptoms.
Symptoms of H. pylori Infection
Most people don’t have symptoms, but when present, they may include:
✔Burning stomach pain, especially a few hours after eating or at night
✔Acidity, bloating, and burping
✔Nausea or vomiting (sometimes with blood in severe cases)
✔Dark stools due to internal bleeding
✔Unexplained weight loss and loss of appetite
If left untreated, H. pylori can cause long-term stomach damage and ulcers.
How is H. pylori Diagnosed?
Doctors use simple tests to check for H. pylori:
✅Breath Test – A special drink is given, and breath samples are analyzed.
✅Stool Test – Checks for H. pylori bacteria in stool samples.
✅Endoscopy – A small tube with a camera is used to examine the stomach.
Treatment of H. pylori Infection
If diagnosed, doctors usually prescribe a 14-day course of antibiotics along with acidreducing medicines (PPIs) to heal the stomach. Treatment includes:
✔Two antibiotics – To kill the bacteria (Amoxicillin, Clarithromycin, or Metronidazole).
✔Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) – Reduce stomach acid and help healing.
✔Bismuth medication – Sometimes used to protect the stomach lining.
Prevention Tips
✅Drink clean, filtered water
✅Wash hands properly before eating and after using the toilet
✅Eat hygienic, well-cooked food
With early diagnosis and proper treatment, H. pylori infection can be cured completely.
If you have frequent acidity or stomach pain, consult a doctor or gastro specialist for testing
and treatment.
